Dubai (UAE) Visa for South African Citizens

South Africans have had a straight line to Dubai for years — Johannesburg and Cape Town both reach it without a change of plane — which is why the emirate turns up so regularly as a December escape, a shopping week, a break in a longer route east, or a run of meetings squeezed into four days. None of those journeys begin at the airport, though. South Africa does not sit on the UAE's visa-free list, so an ordinary South African passport needs its visa arranged before departure, whichever of those trips happens to be yours.

The correction we ask for most often on South African files is the photograph. Usually not a bad one, either — a perfectly good picture, taken at arm's length against the kitchen wall, with the head too large in the frame and a shadow falling behind one shoulder. It needs to look like a passport photograph instead: plain white behind you, face square to the camera, nothing cropped away at the edges. Two minutes to redo at home, and exactly the sort of thing a person notices and a form does not, which is why one of ours looks at every picture before we submit.
